‘He died alone’: Victim speaks out after ex boyfriend, former officer fatally poisons dog

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A woman is grieving the loss of her beloved pet after her 3-year-old dog was poisoned by her ex-boyfriend, who was a police officer at the time.

The woman, Paula Fernandez, spoke at a press conference with Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister on Friday morning after the arrest of her ex, 22-year-old Edwin Campuzano.

“I think there’s two big mistakes our suspect Campuzano made,” Chronister said. “One was what extent a dog lover and owner will go in the pursuit of the truth. He also underestimated her investigative ability.”

Chronister explained that last May, Fernandez went to California on vacation and entrusted a neighbor to care for her 3-year-old Maltese poodle, Milo. But, the day she arrived on the West Coast, she got a heartbreaking call: the neighbor found Milo dead in the home, and something didn’t seem right…
