Over 100 kids get heart screenings at Galen Nursing College to prevent sudden cardiac arrest

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — Dozens of kids and teens got an early heart check at Galen Nursing College Saturday morning as part of a Florida nonprofit’s goal to help prevent the number one cause of death on school campuses.

“Sudden cardiac arrest is a silent killer,” said Krysti Jonas, heart screening director for the non-profit Who We Play For. “A lot of people have no symptoms. Eighty percent of the time, the first symptom is sudden cardiac arrest.”

More than 100 kids were signed up for a screening at Galen Nursing College, which provided the care on National Youth Heart Screening Day.

According to the non-profit, about 1 in 300 kids have a detectable heart condition, which makes sudden cardiac arrest mostly preventable if the cause is caught ahead of time…
