Hillsborough County’s school zone speed camera tickets up more than 1,000%, but program has critics

TAMPA — After hitting the brakes on its school zone speed camera program in December, the city of Tampa is now considering putting it back in motion.

On Thursday, City Council will vote on whether to partner with the same company used by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. But a Spectrum Bay News 9 investigation found that the program has led to a massive spike in tickets and raised questions from drivers about whether it’s improving safety or generating revenue.

Spectrum Bay News 9’s investigation found a more than 1,000% increase in tickets issued so far this school year. Officials at the Sheriff’s Office say the increase is due to “program changes,” but some drivers tell Spectrum Bay News 9 the sudden surge in tickets feels less about safety and more about money…
