Overnight Blasts Rock Tampa Complex, Residents Flee Swordfish Drive Blaze

The early-morning quiet on Swordfish Drive did not last long Thursday, as a series of explosions and a fast-moving fire ripped through a maintenance building at an apartment complex, forcing deputies to evacuate residents and drawing in Hillsborough County fire crews. Multiple 911 callers reported blasts just after 1:30 a.m., and deputies arrived to find the maintenance structure fully engulfed in flames. No injuries were reported, and crews stayed on scene into the morning to bring the blaze under control.

Deputies And Fire Crews Coordinate On The Fly

According to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the 911 Dispatch Center fielded multiple calls reporting explosions around 1:30 a.m., and deputies began evacuating residents as they arrived to find the maintenance building “fully engulfed.” Sheriff Chad Chronister credited quick coordination between deputies and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, saying that teamwork “made all the difference in keeping residents safe.” The sheriff’s post added that county fire crews worked to knock down the flames and secure the surrounding area.

Fire Response And Investigation

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, which handles more than 140,000 calls for service each year, responded alongside deputies to douse the blaze and shield nearby units from damage. Officials did not immediately release a cause of the fire, and investigators typically carry out an origin-and-cause examination once the scene is fully safe. The sheriff’s early update did not list any injuries or estimate how many residents were displaced.
