ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida photographer captured a “rare moment” earlier this month as a manatee mother was spotted with her twins.
The manatees were spotted in South Pasadena’s Bear Creek, according to photographer Tommy Horn.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, twin manatee births are “very uncommon due to the energy required for the demands of one calf and their year-long gestation period.”

The FWC said manatee calves will typically stay with their mother for one to two years before going on their own.
“During that time, calves will begin to develop strong swimming skills, and learn how to navigate tides and seasonal changes, what plants are safe to eat, and where to find food,” FWC said…
