Hillsborough Public Schools, USF impacted by major nationwide data breach

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A major data breach involving schools across the country has impacted institutions here in Tampa Bay.

Thursday, Hillsborough County Public Schools announced that Instructure, the owner of the Canvas Learning Management System, informed clients of a cybersecurity incident that impacted them.

The school district said it was told that the data that was accessed was limited to names, email addresses, and student ID numbers. No passwords, birth dates, social security numbers, government identifiers, or financial information were affected.

“At this time, no action is required by students, families, or staff,” the district said. “The Hillsborough County Public Schools’ IT Security team is actively engaged in this incident.”…
