Tampa Leaders To Unveil Big-Rig Heist Crackdown At Jailhouse Briefing

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister are set to share new details on a sweeping truck theft investigation Wednesday morning, and they are doing it from inside the Falkenburg Road Jail in Tampa. The 9 a.m. briefing will center on a multijurisdictional probe into thefts that officials say have hit commercial trucks and the state’s fuel supply chain.

According to 10 Tampa Bay, the news conference is scheduled in the jail’s assembly area. Chronister and Uthmeier have teamed up on large takedowns before. A July 2025 operation that targeted electronic control modules on semi-trucks affected 93 victims and caused roughly $750,000 in losses, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

What Officials May Announce

At Wednesday’s briefing, officials are expected to outline arrests, new charges or civil subpoenas that stem from months of surveillance and cooperation across jurisdictions. The Attorney General’s Office already brought charges earlier this year in a cargo theft case that alleged nearly $7.8 million in losses, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

Uthmeier has also leaned on subpoenas and other legal demands in truck-related probes, including actions that sought records from employers and other states after a fatal Florida Turnpike crash, as reported by WUSF. That history has local carriers watching closely to see how far this latest case might reach.

Why It Matters for Drivers and Local Commerce

Crime analysts say the offenses at issue, from stolen ECMs that leave tractors sitting useless in a yard to large-scale diesel siphoning, can sideline rigs for days and pile thousands of dollars in extra costs on drivers and trucking companies. A statewide probe dubbed “Operation Van Diesel” led to nearly a dozen arrests and, investigators say, involved 350 thefts valued at roughly $650,000, underscoring how widespread these schemes have become, per FOX 13.

Where Officials Will Speak

The briefing will be held in the Falkenburg Road Jail assembly room, a familiar backdrop the sheriff’s office has used for past enforcement rollouts. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office previously posted a detailed press release about earlier truck and fuel cases and linked to video from prior briefings, giving a preview of the kind of evidence they like to showcase when they think they have cracked a ring.

Legal Stakes

Beyond arrest totals, Uthmeier’s playbook often features both civil and criminal moves, including subpoenas and demands for out-of-state records that can extend investigations to employers or other third parties, according to WUSF. Previous filings and press releases show how state prosecutors may start with arrests, then build toward broader civil or criminal actions designed to disrupt organized theft operations, per the Attorney General’s Office…
