Rockslide closes road

JACKSON COUNTY, W.Va. To get to his house, Butch Long has to pass a ‘Road Closed’ sign.“It needs fixed. If you drive down through there, you’ll see it is really rough,” said Long.Rocks covered Greenhills Road just past the Silverton Fire Department after a large rockslide hit Monday night.Firefighters and heavy maintenance crews from the Department of Highways began clearing the rock.Long said he is not surprised the slide happened.“A lot of people worry about it falling. It has been hanging out pretty bad for a long time. Idon’t know why they haven’t done anything to it. Even the road is bad right there,” said Long.Chief Jason Baltic with the Silverton Fire Department said he reported the area to the DOH a few years ago.“I wasn’t a matter of ‘if,’ it was a matter of ‘when’. There is another section next to it that’s bad too,” said Baltic.WSAZ asked the DOH when the slip would be cleared.“Crews responded to the slip immediately and the road has since reopened today, Tuesday, January 23, 2024. There were no reported injuries or impacts on utilities due to the slide,” said a DOH spokesperson. However, when WSAZ received that email, the road was closed and crews were still clearing rock.“Both lanes of Greenhills Road are currently open to the white line and traffic is flowing in both directions. The road will close tomorrow, Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at 8 a.m. as crews will clear approximately 300-feet of rockfall while in the area. The roadway will reopen around 3:30 p.m. tomorrow, and close again in the morning of Thursday, January 24, 2024 as crews finish work. Approximately 500 tons of rock fell early this morning, Tuesday, January 23, 2024 and there were no reported injuries. Power did go out in the local area but has since been restored.,” a DOH spokesperson responded Tuesday evening.Long said he worries if a car was driving by.“That could have been real bad,” said Long. “I have been told that they have contacted the state road about trying to do something with it, but I don’t know what they could do you know.”
