Newberg schools outrank state average in 2023 graduation rates

The numbers are in: The kids in the Class of 2023 were all right.

Although Newberg-Dundee Public Schools graduation rates were overall above average, some local student demographics fell behind the curve.

Graduation rates across Oregon remained steady from the 2021-22 to the 2022-23 school years — 81.3%, the highest on record.

“These 37,000 graduates overcame historic challenges to earn their diploma. During their journey to graduation the class of 2023 endured the full, multi-year impact of COVID and its aftermath,” ODE Director Charlene Williams said in a press release.

Newberg High School ranked above the statewide graduation average for the Class of 2023, with 85.5% of its seniors graduating. That’s up from the year prior at 82.7%.

Bringing up the rear in terms of graduation rates locally were students who learned English any time in high school. Ten of the 14 students in that category graduated on time: 71.4%.

Second from bottom were homeless students, which saw three in four graduate with their peers: 75% of the 20 students. That’s up from 40% for the Class of 2022.
