Woodburn, satellite communities seek housing assistance

A new grant application by the city of Woodburn, working in conjunction with Hubbard and Gervais, could lead to some welcome housing assistance for families with low-to-moderate incomes.

On Jan. 22 Woodburn City Council unanimously approved the community development grant application proposed by Woodburn Director of Special Projects Renata Wakeley and Community Services Director Jesse Cuomo. The proposal includes a contract with Salem-based DevNW , which would administer and manage the funded program if awarded.

Woodburn had previously received and distributed CDBG funds from Business Oregon, and the city’s proficient handling of those funds helped foster this possibility of augmenting the program.

“We received a call from Business Oregon (telling us) that they have additional funds – community development block grant funds,” Woodburn Wakeley said. “And because the city had a documented need, and we were very efficient in getting those dollars out, we were assisting not only the region but Business Oregon, which has a timeline in making sure these funds are allocated.”
