Land use: Canby residents give it the sticker test

Placing colored stickers on a map in a middle school cafeteria may not seem like a vital component to Canby’s future, but those stickers have power.

And the people who gathered at Baker Prairie Middle School Jan. 17 for the third community summit as part of the “Cultivating Canby” initiative were intent on making the future of land use in Canby as positive and effective as possible.

The city is in the process of updating its comprehensive plan and transportation system plan, and one of the things that those plans are concerned with is land use for the future. The State of Oregon requires cities in Oregon to maintain a 20-year supply of land for jobs and housing.

“The city is exploring a potential urban growth boundary expansion and part of those efforts include work with consultants and the state, but also working with the community, those inside the current city limits, but also those outside the city limits who might be within the potential expansion area,” explained Jamie Stickel, economic development director for the City of Canby.
