The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board approved two changes regarding the current school year calendar after four days of classes were canceled due to winter weather.
During the Jan. 22 meeting, the board voted to approve an adjustment in the middle school and high school semester calendar and the end of the school year for all students.
The end-of-semester grading day, originally planned for Monday, Jan. 29, was moved to Friday, Feb. 2; students do not have school on end-of-semester grading days.
The changes to the middle school and high school calendars do not affect the elementary level students and calendar.
With the extension of the end of the school year, the balance in school days between semester one and semester two is imbalanced. The adjustment aims to remedy this for teachers and students.
“With the related arts classes, a few instructional days can make a big difference in balancing those opportunities for learning. So when we are looking at potentially adding some days at the end of the year, that lengthens that semester two part of the year. If we don’t do anything about adjusting semester one, that really can create quite a big imbalance between semester one and semester two or the different quarters that folks are working with,” said Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Spencer-Iiams.
