Northwest Human Services (NWHS) has introduced a new mobile outreach van to enhance its homeless services. The van, funded by the City of Salem and the Willamette Health Council, will offer health services to Salem’s homeless and medically vulnerable residents. It features a medical exam bed, ample storage for supplies, and a private care area. The NWHS Outreach Team, including rotating nurses and community health workers, will use the van to provide on-site nursing care, medical advice, and resources.

Stephen Goins, NWHS’s Chief Operations Officer, emphasized the van’s role in extending care and offering a safe, clean environment for homeless individuals. The outreach model is designed to lessen the strain on emergency services, treat medical conditions before they worsen, and prevent avoidable deaths. It also aims to link people with resources like transportation for healthcare access, housing and shelter information, and assistance with the Oregon Health Plan (OHP) application.

The NWHS Outreach Team also provides snacks, seasonal supplies, first aid kits, hygiene kits, and clothing. The van represents a significant advancement in NWHS’s mission to offer health and social support to those living outdoors, especially those with mobility challenges and untreated health conditions.
