Pedestrian killed in crash identified by Salem police

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — The pedestrian who died in a fatal crash in Salem Thursday evening has been identified as 51-year-old David Henten Stockam, the Salem Police Department said.

The family of Stockam, a Salem resident, has been notified of his death — marking the city’s third traffic fatality of the year — police said.

Emergency responders were called to the area of Mission Street Southeast and Hawthorne Avenue Southeast at roughly 6:15 p.m. Thursday evening after it was reported that a pedestrian was struck by a car east of the intersection. Firefighters responding to the scene pronounced the man — later identified as Stockam — dead, police said.

The investigation closed down a portion of Mission Street Southeast for roughly four hours.

Police initially reported the incident as a hit-and-run since the person who called it in said the involved driver left the scene. However, authorities later clarified the investigation revealed the driver stopped and called police a few blocks from where the incident happened.
