January arctic blast led to 7-year high in Oregon workplace fall claims

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — January’s arctic blast led to 414 workplace accident claims in Oregon, marking a seven-year high for the state.

Earlier this week, the State Accident Insurance Fund — a workers’ compensation insurance company — reported that it hadn’t received that many winter-storm-related claims since January 2017.

According to SAIF, 151 claims came out of its Northern region that includes the city of Portland.

Another 58 claims were submitted from the valley region, where Salem is located. The company said this is the highest number of slip, trip and fall claims it’s recorded from the region within one quarter.

Despite the winter storm occurring one month ago , Portland and its surrounding areas are still seeing the fallout.

The extreme weather event cost Portland General Electric over $30 million, restaurants faced revenue loss due to closures, and the Portland Water Bureau has even begun to offer credits to customers who were affected by frozen pipes.
