Wilsonville rector Brendan Barnicle nominated for Bishop position in Massachusetts

In March, the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts announced four nominees for a Bishop position. Brendan Barnicle, rector at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Wilsonville, was among them. Need to explain somewhere up top what the process is for becoming a bishop and the remaining hurdles.

Barnicle said the final vote will happen on May 18 after he attends meet-and-greet events at multiple churches in the Massachusetts diocese. Should he earn the position, he would begin the new role in October.

He said the vote is done by lay members of the church and the clergy, and he has to win a majority of votes.

Barnicle came to the Wilsonville church five years ago, after working as the rector at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Parish in Portland for two years. Before coming to the ministry, he said he was an investment banker for 20 years.

In his time as rector at the St. Francis church, Barnicle said he helped build community after the coronavirus pandemic left members isolated and worked with the church on social justice advocacy. He also used his finance background to connect with members and help with the business side of the church.
