Oregon State Hospital cleared from immediate jeopardy status after patient death in May

Oregon State Hospital has been cleared from immediate jeopardy status by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The state-run hospital was placed on immediate jeopardy status in June for issues related to hourly checks of patient location and wellness.

An investigation began after an unexpected patient death in May, according to a news release from the Oregon Health Authority.

The Oregonian reported Oregon State Police were investigating the death and said the patient died of a suspected fentanyl overdose.

Being placed in immediate jeopardy status puts hospitals at risk of losing federal Medicaid and Medicare funding if they are not able to make corrections.

This is still an active survey process, according to OHA, meaning the survey work has been completed by CMS but a plan of correction has not been developed. The next step will be the official statement of deficiencies from CMS.

The hospital will continue to follow the procedures in the immediate jeopardy removal plan while waiting for statement of deficiencies, according to OHA communications manager Larry Bingham.
