Oregon now has second largest measles outbreak in US

The number of measles cases reported in Marion County since mid-June has increased to 14, according to the Oregon Health Authority’s dashboard.

The total number of cases in the state has risen to 23. Illinois is the only state this year to have reported more cases of the measles than Oregon.

All of the Oregon cases have been in unvaccinated individuals. They have been concentrated in three counties — Marion, Clackamas and Multnomah. The majority of the cases have been in individuals younger than 19, with five reported in individuals older than 20. Two people have been hospitalized.

Measles is on the rise nationwide. As of Thursday, the CDC reported 203 cases in 2024, compared to 58 cases in all of 2023. The majority of cases this year, 86%, involved individuals who were either unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status.

On July 26, OHA warned of a possible exposure in Marion County. The organization identified three locations in Marion County where individuals may have been exposed to the disease on July 17:
