Supply company fined over exposing Salem workers to fall hazards

The Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division has fined a Wisconsin-based supply company $92,226 after an inspection of a Salem job site found the company repeatedly failed to protect workers from potential hazards, the agency said in a news release.

Inspectors of the Salem site found two employees using a conveyor system to transport roofing materials at a house. One employee on the ground loaded the conveyor while the other employee placed the materials on the roof.

The inspection found the employee placing the materials on the roof was exposed to a potential fall of up to 18 feet with no fall protection system in place.

Oregon OHSA conducted the inspection of ABC Supply Co. Inc ., a distributor of roofing supplies based in Beloit, Wisconsin, as part of a prevention-based program.

The citation marks the third time since July 2022 that inspectors found the company violated fall protection requirements in Oregon, according to a news release.

“Any job task where an employee is assigned to work at heights must be taken seriously by employers. Our fall protection standards are there to safeguard workers each step of the way, from supply and distribution to finishing the project,” Renée Stapleton, administrator for Oregon OSHA, said in the release.
