Body of 35-year-old Salem man recovered by dive team in Willamette River

The body of a 35-year-old Salem man was recovered Friday night by Oregon Rescue Divers in the Willamette River after apparently drowning on Monday near Wallace Marine Park, according to Salem Police.

Police said the man, identified as Derik Morganstern, went into the river near Wallace Marine Park around 11 p.m. on Monday after a woman jumped into the river from the Union Street Pedestrian Bridge and was struggling to swim.

Police said officers located the woman who did make it shore and was later taken to a hospital. Witnesses told police Morganstern had gone under the river surface and did resurface.

Police said officers searched for the man and deployed two drones. Salem firefighters also assisted with a search boat but were unable to locate Morganstern, police said.

Salem Police and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team also searched for Morganstern on Tuesday but could not find him.

Divers from the volunteer team from Bend recovered what they believe to be Morganstern’s body at 5 p.m. Friday.
