OPINION: Kroger-Albertsons merger may protect local stores, jobs

I’ve been following the discussions around the Kroger-Albertsons merger closely, and one thing that isn’t being talked about enough is the fact that Albertsons has been struggling financially for some time, and if this merger doesn’t go through, they may have no choice but to close or sell off stores like Safeway.

Think about where you buy your own groceries — from online to big box stores. There have never been more diverse options outside the traditional grocer.

What people should understand is that this merger could be the best option for preserving the stores and jobs that so many in our community rely on. Kroger has committed to keeping stores open and retaining employees, which is something that might not happen if Albertsons is forced to sell off its stores piecemeal. It is even bringing a new grocer to Oregon with C&S, the grocery operator behind Piggly Wiggly and Grand Union stores, planning to take over 62 grocery stores throughout the state.

Without this merger, we could see a lot more disruption in our communities, with stores closing unexpectedly and employees losing their jobs. The merger offers a way to stabilize the situation, ensuring that our local grocery stores can continue to serve the public.
