Oregon State University Extension will hold a Basic Forestry Shortcourse for woodland owners and caretakers in the Mid-Willamette Valley and surrounding areas this October.
The Basic Forestry Shortcourse, scheduled for Stayton, is a core class offered throughout the state periodically by local OSU Extension foresters, providing an introductory program for people who are new to managing a small woodland property or who would like a refresher on the basics.
“This course is a unique opportunity for woodland owners to connect with their neighbors and get their questions answered by local experts,” shared Glenn Ahrens, Oregon State University Extension forester serving Marion County. “It is a great option for those who recently acquired land, who are facing challenges with their land management, or who are simply looking to learn something new.”
Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on activities, participants will learn about plant identification, assessing growing conditions and tree health, forest ecology and management, enhancing wildlife habitat, harvesting and operations, and local resources for technical and financial assistance. A field day will also allow students to tour a local small woodland, seeing examples of concepts they learn in the course on-the-ground.
