Dayton woman arrested on allegations she bilked county VFW post out of hundreds of thousands of dollars

A woman responsible for the financial well-being of a local veteran’s group has, according to law enforcement, betrayed that trust.

Cheryl Elizabeth Campos served as the quartermaster for the Greater Yamhill County Veterans of Foreign War Post 4015 until she was fired from the position in the spring on allegations she bilked the veteran’s group of upwards of $200,000.

Campos, 61, who has also served as an adjutant for the state VFW organization, was detained after an arrest warrant was issued on Sept. 5 by Judge Jennifer Chapman and served by sheriff’s deputies.

A Yamhill County grand jury returned an indictment against Campos on Sept. 3, charging her with 11 counts of aggravated theft and three counts of first-degree theft, which are Class B and Class C felonies, respectively. Campos was arraigned on Sept. 5 in Yamhill County Circuit Court before Judge Ladd Wiles.

The indictment alleges that over a roughly two-year period from June 2022 through August of this year, the Dayton resident stole a minimum of $114,000 from the VFW post. All the money, the indictment insists, was taken from two accounts over which Campos had authority. The indictment also alleges that she pilfered $10,000 or more on 10 occasions and $1,000 or more on three occasions.
