Bingham Fire: Evacuations ordered for Marion, Pamelia lakes in Jefferson Wilderness

A wildfire burning near Marion Forks will bring the closure of two of the most popular areas in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness.

The Bingham Fire, which grew to 195 acres by Thursday morning, has prompted a level 3 evacuation order, meaning “go now,” from roughly Pamelia Lake to the Marion lakes area, officials said Thursday morning.

In addition, a level 2 evacuation warning, meaning “be prepared to go,” has been issued for the Marion Forks Campground and fish hatchery area and just across Highway 22 southeast of Detroit, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office .

The Pacific Crest Trail through the Jefferson Wilderness will remain open for now.

Red flag warning for east winds issued Thursday

The areas are on high alert Thursday after a red flag warning was issued by the National Weather Service that could mean fire spread due to strong and dry east winds.

“Today is a critical day,” Detroit District ranger Michelle King said.

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning until 8 p.m. Thursday due to east winds of 20-30 mph — which often bring rapid fire spread — and low humidity.
