Wilsonville volleyball battles to sixth at state

The Wildcats left it all on the court.

The Wilsonville volleyball team battled its way back to the Class 5A state tournament for the seventh year in a row, and once there, played more sets and more points than any other team before eventually finishing sixth overall . The 5A tournament was held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9, at Forest Grove High School.

“I am super proud of our team’s performance,” said Wilsonville senior opposite Lana Gillas, who was named to the all-tournament second team . “I think that we could have given Churchill some better competition the first day, but taking Caldera was a huge win for us.

“I think that against Corvallis (in the fourth-place match), we just got tired. Playing ten sets in one day is exhausting and we just weren’t able to finish out that game. Overall, though, sixth is a huge accomplishment and I am super happy we were able to take home a trophy.”

“I think we started off the tournament rough, but … we worked so hard to get here that we had to put our all and everything into our Saturday games,” said Wildcat senior setter Ellis Underhill, another second-team all-tournament selection. “We played two five-set matches (and) we fell just short of winning the second, but we pushed and dug so deep that I am proud of how this team finished.”
