Dancing, pan dulce and a piñata were all part of Wilsonville’s second Las Posadas celebration.
On Tuesday, Dec. 17, people gathered at the Wilsonville Community Center for the holiday festivities. Las Posadas, largely celebrated in Mexico but also in other Latin American countries, honors the journey of Mary and Joseph to find shelter in Bethlehem before the birth of Jesus.
The Wilsonville Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee first organized the celebration last year, and this year committee chair Karla Brashear said she was “absolutely amazed by the growth” in attendees. She estimated that turnout “at least doubled” compared to last year.
Brashear said her favorite aspect of Wilsonville’s celebration is “getting the community together,” and she wants residents to know that all are welcome at the event.
“It’s about building community, getting to know each other, learning about each other,” Brashear said, after noting that people do not need to be Latino, Latina or religious to attend. “It’s just a wonderful event for families to come together as a community and be with each other.”
