Principal Jessica Brenden at Mount Angel’s Kennedy High School is finding ways to foster connection between her students.
After growing concerned about her students’ sociability during lunchtime, Brenden applied for and received a Lines to Life grant award to help bring some fun and games to the school. Lines to Life is a Portland-based organization dedicated to preventing substance abuse and suicide and promoting mental wellness.
Last month Brenden said she began noticing that the students had trouble filling the time and interacting without their cellphones or set activities during lunchtime.
“It was pretty quiet, and students seemed a little miserable around here just before afternoon classes started,” Brenden said.
So, looking for a solution, Brenden had the idea to bring the students some fun and engaging activities. Through a student voting board, students indicated what kind of equipment and activities they would like to use during their break times.
Next, Brenden got to work seeking grant funding, which is when she connected with the Lines for Life grant opportunity.
