Wilsonville developing plan for natural area management

While Wilsonville is known for having good parks, a recent survey found some natural areas are in need of land management.

Wilsonville city staff and consultants outlined the goals and priorities of the Natural Area Management Plan, which is still being developed, at a City Council on Monday, Dec. 2. The presentation also included the results of a survey on the city’s parks.

Ash Creek Forest Management consultant Ian Christie said the goal was to help the city identify priorities for long-term maintenance across the natural areas.

“We are aiming to identify priorities across the city for long-term maintenance needs and enhancement opportunities for habitat and public value,” Christie said. “Through that process we’re aiming to recognize not just the ecosystem value of these natural areas but the non-habit values that they serve as a space for public enjoyment, appreciation and recreation.”

Part of the planning process included surveys across Wilsonville parks and natural areas assessing current habitat conditions to help prioritize restoration work. The areas were assessed on the amount of noxious or exotic species, as well as native species, overall species “richness” and tree canopy coverage.
