PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Oregon researchers have uncovered a water reservoir beneath the Cascades that is estimated to be three times the capacity of Lake Mead.
University of Oregon revealed its scientists were among the group that discovered a massive aquifer, described by National Geographic as a “body of rock and/or sediment that holds groundwater,” below volcanic rocks at the Central Oregon Cascades.

The university reported that the water totals to at least 81 cubic kilometers, tripling Lake Mead’s maximum capacity. The reservoir along the Colorado River has long been considered as the biggest in the U.S.
