Witness who died on eve of murder trial raised as alternate killer in Beaverton cold case

Defense attorneys for a 70-year-old Newberg man accused of strangling his wife to death three decades years ago suggested another witness who died by suicide could be the true killer as the cold case trial came to a close Wednesday.

For the past three weeks, Washington County prosecutors have built a case centering on the missing alibi and stormy if not violent relationship between Robert Atrops and his estranged wife, Debbie Atrops.
