‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ anniversary inspires ‘Knit for Mental Fitness’ campaign

While there’s all sorts of hoopla surrounding the 40th anniversary of “The Goonies,” another movie filmed in Oregon is celebrating a big birthday this year. “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” the Oscar-winning film adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel, opened in 1975.

“The Goonies” may have a 40th birthday bash “Goonies Weekend” coming up, but the 50th anniversary of “Cuckoo’s Nest” is being marked in a less boisterous way, with a campaign that connects with themes explored in the film.

A community initiative called “Knit for Mental Fitness” is inviting members of the public to knit Watch Caps, like the headgear Jack Nicholson’s character, Randle P.McMurphy, wore in “Cuckoo’s Nest.”…
