Yamhill County homeless count proves encouraging

The good news is that the Yamhill Community Action Partnership’s annual Point In Time homeless count, held in January, found that no youths under the age of 18 were living unsheltered with their families in the county.

“We’ve seen the number of children living unsheltered with their families steadily drop — from 79 in 2020 to 31 in 2023 to seven in 2024 to zero this year,” said Amber Hansen-Moore, YCAP’s deputy director. “The numbers were deeply disturbing. Instead of being in a safe and stable home, these children were living with a parent or guardian in tents, cars and broken-down RVs on the side of the road.”

Hansen-Moore added that YCAP’s annual snapshot of homelessness in the county found that the decrease in people over 65 years old living without shelter reached one this year. That’s down from 11 individuals in 2023 and seven in 2024…
