‘It was embarrassing’: Wilsonville teen upset over treatment of art entry in contest

WILSONVILLE, Ore. — True Williams figures it took her about 16 hours to create a sculpture of a human heart made of clay and cigarette butts that she picked off the ground at a concert. She didn’t mind the effort, so long as her art inspired people to not smoke, a habit she said led to the deaths of her grandparents.

“It’s kind of like a (public service announcement) to people,” said Williams, 17. “I wanted them to almost feel grief from it.”

Williams, a junior at Wilsonville High School, titled her sculpture “Chain Smoker.” She was thrilled when her art teacher, Angennette Escobar, entered it in Clackamas Education Service District Regional Art Show…
