New lifejacket kiosks unveiled in Independence aim to prevent drownings

INDEPENDENCE, Ore. — Three new lifejacket kiosks now stand in Independence’s Riverview Park — part of a community effort to prevent future tragedies following the drowning death of a 13-year-old boy last summer.

Gregorio Maximiano-Solano disappeared in the Willamette River on July 7, 2024. After an extensive multiday search, his body was found near Keizer Rapids Park. The tragedy sparked a push for improved water safety in the popular recreation area.

“This is a more vibrant, prettier colors that hopefully draws more attention to the life jacket station,” said Emmanuel Goicochea with the city of Independence. “And hopefully prevent more tragedies like last summer.”…
