Scio woman dies in Linn County house fire

SCIO, Ore. – Multiple law enforcement and fire agencies responded to a Scio house fire on Tuesday morning in which a 57-year-old woman died, according to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

LCSO officials said they responded to multiple 911 calls starting at 7:05 a.m. on May 20 regarding a house fire at a residence on Highway 226 east of Scio. Callers told dispatchers that the home was fully engulfed with an occupant still inside, sheriff’s deputies said. Authorities said that a 76-year-old woman, identified as Marilyn Hanson, escaped the blaze and told emergency personnel that another person was still inside the home. The fire’s severity had progressed to a point where fire crews were initially unable to enter the residence, sheriff’s officials said. The LCSO said that once entry was possible firefighters found a deceased victim, identified as 57-year-old Sharon Dougherty of Scio. Hanson, who suffered life-threatening burns over much of her body, was transported first to Santiam Hospital and then to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, sheriff’s deputies said.
