Police arrest driver after high-speed chase and standoff in Oregon

BENTON COUNTY, Ore. — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) tells us that, a high-speed chase early Saturday morning ended with the arrest of Fernando Urrutia Ramos, of Independence, OR, after a tense standoff with law enforcement.

PCSO shares that the incident began around 5:37 a.m. when a Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) deputy attempted to stop a speeding Honda Accord on its way to McMinnville. The driver, later identified as Urrutia Ramos, turned onto Highway 22 towards Salem, then dangerously switched to the westbound lanes while traveling eastbound. The deputy chose not to pursue the vehicle on the wrong side of the highway to avoid escalating the risk.

A Polk County Sheriff’s sergeant, traveling westbound, witnessed the Honda elude the deputy and head south on Highway 99 towards Monmouth. The sergeant requested assistance from the Monmouth Police Department (MPD) to intercept the vehicle with spike strips…
