PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Two men are facing several charges in Marion County after allegedly breaking into a Salem ATM in an attempted “jackpotting” scheme, authorities announced.
Just before 3 a.m. Tuesday, security personnel at Umpqua Bank reported two men were tampering with an ATM at Center Street Northeast.

Surveillance video showed the suspects using a key to access the inside of the machine then taking pictures of the ATM’s components before leaving the scene, according to Salem Police Department, calling the incident an attempted “jackpotting,” scheme in which malware is installed in an ATM, prompting the machine to dispense money on command. Officials note the crime does not directly impact consumer accounts and banks are the primary victims in the scheme.
