SALEM, Ore. – Construction crews are making steady progress on a series of upgrades at Geer Community Park, but most of the site remains closed as work continues. New features will not be ready for public use until later this year or next spring.
The improvements, part of a broader effort to enhance Salem’s community parks, include:
- A new skatepark designed by Evergreen Skateparks of Portland, with upgraded pathways.
- A fenced dog park with separate areas for active and quieter dogs, an accessible paved entry, and two covered bench areas.
- Rebuilt soccer fields with new grading, irrigation, and drainage.
- Upgraded baseball fields with artificial turf infields to support both baseball and softball and extend the playing season.
- Reservable picnic shelters located near the skatepark and dog park.
This week, contractors are making significant progress on the baseball and soccer fields. Seeding for the soccer fields is expected in late September to allow grass to establish before winter.
A related project will add a sidewalk along Park Avenue NE and a pedestrian crossing, connecting nearby neighborhoods through the Oregon State Hospital campus and into Geer Park. Once complete, it will link to new skatepark pathways, creating a continuous walking route…
