Salem Police have launched investigations into two separate fatal shootings that took place overnight, as reported by the City of Salem’s official news release. The first incident occurred in the 1600 block of 40th PL SE, where a 30-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds following a reported collision around 12:30 a.m. Despite being rushed to Salem Health, he was later pronounced dead.
The second shooting unfolded at Wallace Marine Park at about 1:30 a.m. A 60-year-old man was discovered at a homeless campsite with gunshot wounds. He was carried out of the tough terrain by officers and then transferred to Salem Health, where he too succumbed to his injuries. The investigations are being led by the Salem Police Violent Crimes Unit with assistance from the Oregon State Police Major Crimes Section, due to limited resources in the Wallace Marine Park case.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims, awaiting notification of their families. Detectives currently believe that both shootings were isolated incidents and unrelated to one another.
