Molalla Police Department, City Mourn Loss of Beloved K9 Officer Benz

MOLALLA, Ore. – The Molalla Police Department and community are mourning the loss of K9 Officer Benz, a cherished member of the force who was put down last week after a sudden cancer diagnosis.

A Sudden Illness

The six-year-old German Shepherd had been showing signs of discomfort when a swollen leg prompted a veterinary visit. Tests revealed an aggressive form of cancer, and veterinarians delivered the devastating prognosis. Faced with the likelihood of a painful decline and poor quality of life, the department and Benz’s handler made the difficult decision to put him down.

Years of Dedicated Service

Benz began his career with the Milwaukie Police Department, serving from 2021 to 2023, before joining the Molalla Police Department in 2023. Over the course of his career, he contributed not only as a working K9 but also as a beloved figure at community events.

The Molalla Police Department described him as both professional in duty and warm in personality, noting his ability to connect with residents and his love for children.

Remembered as Loving and Loyal

In a heartfelt post shared on Facebook, the department reflected on Benz’s impact:

“Benz was such a loving and fun dog. He enjoyed meet and greets, community events, time with family, and all the pets. In his honor he will be incorporated in a piece of the design of the new police department.”…
