ALBANY, Ore. — Hazelnuts — also called filberts — take center stage in the latest Fresh From Oregon segment. According to Oregon State University, the entire state produces more than 65,000 tons each year. Additionally, OSU says Oregon’s annual hazelnut crop is worth about $110 million.
“Oregon’s a super exciting place to grow nuts,” said Shonda Warner, co-managing partner at Farmacopia Farms.
Warner and her team are currently busy harvesting hazelnuts, which fall from the trees at this time of year. They’re best when they’re fresh, she said, which means within about three or four months of being harvested — but they can last a year or two when frozen…
