The Salem City Council will discuss a proposal on November 10, 2025, to donate $20,000 to Marion Polk Food Share. The proposal aims to help families in Marion and Polk counties affected by the recent suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, which began on November 1. The council is considering this donation as city employees take part in an annual charitable giving campaign. So far, the campaign has raised over $8,000 and will continue until December 5.
City Manager Krishna Namburi said many families who rely on SNAP did not receive their benefits at the start of November. He noted that partial federal funding may be released soon, but administrative delays could slow relief. Namburi encouraged residents to support each other during this time.
