At Run Oregon, we obviously love running — no surprise there. But we also love the Pacific Northwest and everything that makes this corner of the world such an incredible place to explore. Running is a big part of who we are, but it doesn’t define us entirely.
That’s where our Road Trip features come in: they celebrate the best of both worlds by spotlighting great local lodging while also highlighting nearby routes, trails, and race opportunities to help you make the most of your adventure.
The latest installment in this series takes us to The Compass McMinnville, a five-room, modern spin on the classic inn — tucked right into the heart of downtown McMinnville. It’s the kind of place that blends small-town charm with thoughtful design, making it an ideal basecamp for exploring everything the area has to offer, both on and off the run.
First the Running:
McMinnville may not shout “running town” at first glance, but spend a night at The Compass and you’ll quickly realize how runner-friendly the area actually is. Sidewalks are plentiful, routes are easy to access, and with Linfield University right there in town, you even have a collegiate-level track option if you’re looking to sprinkle in some speedwork. And whether you’re chasing miles on pavement or dirt, there are a couple true gems nearby.
Westside Bicycle/Pedestrian Greenway (Strava Link)
If you’re sticking to the roads, the Westside Bicycle/Pedestrian Greenway is your go-to. The access point is roughly 1.6 miles from The Compass, and once you hop on the path, you’ll find a pedestrian-only stretch that heads north for another 1.2 miles to Baker Creek Road. It’s not technical or hilly — just clean, simple, uninterrupted running. Make it a full out-and-back from the hotel and you’ve banked a smooth 5.6+ mile run without having to overthink a thing…
