CORVALLIS, Ore. – Benton County recognized the Day of Remembrance for Japanese Americans incarcerated during World War II during the Feb. 17 Board of Commissioners meeting.
According to Benton County officials, the event highlighted the impact of Executive Order 9066, which led to the forced removal of over 120,000 Japanese Americans. Dr. Janet Seiko Nishihara from Oregon State University read a proclamation marking Feb. 19 as a day to honor those affected. She emphasized the importance of sharing personal and family histories to understand the lasting impacts of incarceration.
