Newberg Tiger wrestlers once again are tops in state

PORTLAND – Newberg had math on its side heading into the finals of the Class 6A state wrestling championships Saturday at Memorial Coliseum. It was mathematically impossible for the second-place team, West Linn, to overtake the Tigers as the blue and gold had a 58-point lead.

Three Newberg wrestlers, all seniors, advanced to the finals: Kiah Worthington at 113 pounds, Kingston Meadors at 138 pounds and Gavin Rangel at 144 pounds. Both Worthington and Rangel have won state titles in the past.

Worthington manhandled Sherwood’s Caden Burnett 8-1 to earn the title, while Rangel pinned Grants Pass’ Zane Hill in the waning moments of the third period to earn the top spot on the podium. Meadors suffered an 8-4 decision at the hands of West Linn’s Ryder Sprague to finish second…
