Oregon State researchers track Iran war damage with satellite imagery

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Researchers at Oregon State University are harnessing satellite imagery to evaluate the extent of destruction in Iran due to ongoing conflict. The Conflict Ecology Lab, established in 2015, leverages satellite technology to provide additional insights into armed conflicts worldwide.

Jamon Van Den Hoek, who leads the lab team, says satellite imagery can reveal areas of destruction in cities caused by conflict.

“In the case of our work, we tend to look at these sort of very immediate shocks to cities caused by armed conflict, so there we’re looking for these really just outlier events, things that are totally unexpected anomalies,” Van Den Hoek said…
