Newberg’s Castañeda misses championship by less than a second

Sophia Castañeda missed out on a first-place finish in a prestigious national track meet last week by less time than it takes to blink.

The Newberg High School senior fell to first-place finisher Sophie Rambo of the Grassfield Track Club by 0.04-seconds in the 400-meter sprint at the New Balance National Indoor meet March 12-15 in Boston.

Rambo, based in Chesapeake, Virginia, vanquished Castañeda 53.82 seconds to 53.86 seconds in the sprint race, but didn’t threaten the meet record of 52.62 seconds, set in 2019 by Kimberly Harris of the Jackrabbit Track Club in Georgia…
