Overhaul of U.S. Forest Service includes closure of Portland HQ, opening of Salem office

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland’s U.S. Forest Service offices will be impacted as part of the federal agency’s major restructuring.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture — which includes USFS — announced plans to relocate the agency’s headquarters from Washington, D.C. to Salt Lake City in an effort to focus on its West Coast operations. The shakeup comes with the closure of all 10 of the Forest Service’s regional offices, with its Pacific Northwest office located on 1220 SW 3rd Ave. in Portland.

In addition, federal leaders are set to shutter the USFS’ research and development facilities — one of which is also located in the Rose City. Officials will consolidate several research facilities into a singular station in Fort Collins, Colo., although the Corvallis and LaGrande stations are expected to remain.
