This Oregon State freshman went from playing hacky sack to striking out 8 batters in a stunning relief performance

CORVALLIS — The plan was not for Dax Whitney to throw only two innings. But a 1:45 lightning delay forced Oregon State to shut down its starter and turn to Trey Morris, who delivered the best outing of his young career.

With the No. 7 Beavers trailing in the third, Morris retired five straight and 14 of 16 over 4 2/3 innings of winning relief. The freshman left-hander allowed one run on one hit and one hit batter with a season-best eight strikeouts to lead OSU to a 6-3 win over Cal Poly Friday night at Goss Stadium.

“What Trey did is just outstanding,” Oregon State coach Mitch Canham said. “Every time he takes the ball you’d never know he was a true freshman. Pitching like an upperclassman in a big moment there while we’re behind, he gets us back in the game and holds the lead and strikes out eight against a really good team.”…
