Salem’s Oldest Tree Set to Come Down After Approximate 400 Year Life

SALEM, Ore. — Salem’s oldest tree has been through a lot. But, after approximately 400 years, root rot has gotten too bad and crews are set to remove the massive white oak any day.

Willamette University Biologist David Craig tells our News Partner KGW they are looking forward to studying the tree and pinpointing its age once they receive several thick slices of the trunk they call cookies. The tree along Marion Street Northeast even has an old chain it has actually grown around. Craig says it’s fascinating to think about what that tree has seen over the years…
